How to choose a color story
The right color story can make your luggage packing easier while streamlining your clothing selection to avoid overpacking. Choosing a color story can be a difficult task especially when getting ready for a get-a-way. Why choose a color story? How to choose a color story that works for all seasons? Many have asked for my secrets to traveling with a carry-on, well, it’s having a game plan and choosing a color story.
In the past I packed according to the trends of the season which included random color patterns and excessive amounts of shoes. I look at previous vacation photos and my outfits were not as put together as I liked. I decided that packing light with a purpose has will improved my shopping choices and color story.
I usually stick to 3 colors when packing for my trips. Interchanging pieces with different textures and fabrics make your outfits look cohesive and put together. How I stay organized with my clothing color story? I have photos of all my clothes and accessories in a album on my phone. I can reference my outfits and shift then around defining my packing color story.
Below is my color story for fall/winter which I packed with me to Greece and London this past winter. It made my packing so easy and I was able to look stylish while doing so.
Where to shop for classic seasonal clothing
Once your color story is selected, the hunt for finding the right clothes to satisfy your taste is now a task. I’m not suggesting you go out and spend a lot of money on new clothes. Make smart decisions on your outfits by mixing hi and low priced point items. My go-to stores without fail are Express, J.Crew and Free People. Since the re-branding of Express, their clothes are designer inspired and alway classic in style. I always find pieces that mesh well with my designer clothes and accessories. that people ask “where did you get that”. Express always have promotions and offer dollar discounts if you’re a A list member and J.Crew offers discounted promotions frequently.
Another great store for funky pieces is Free People, Zara and Aritzia. Both stores offer classic pieces with a trendy approach. The price point is slightly higher but the quality is unique. Often times I include pieces from these stores based on research and product review. When making a clothing purchase on the designer side, I always research before diving in.
If you’re on the hunt for quick basics and staple pieces, you can’t go wrong with Target and H&M. Target has great basics all year at reasonable prices that wear well after washing. If your color story is basic black, white and tan, Target is you bet choice in finding those with no issues.

Before packing my items for vacation, I refer to my photo album (found in my phone) and I fold all my items so nothing is forgotten. Once the clothes are determined then I choose my accessories and miscellaneous items. Most of my trips I take a carry-on size suitcase or a duffel bag. Generally I do not check my bag unless I plan to shop in duty-free and don’t want to pack the items I purchased there. While in London in Heathrow, I went crazy at the Louie store and couldn’t pack the items purchased in the suitcase as I checked it prior. Note for next time – don’t check the bag!
